A Good Website Before SEO

“Can you help us with our SEO?”

I can’t tell you how many times I get asked this question and then, after looking at the website in question I see the main problem isn’t SEO, it’s a lack of organization and content. It isn’t a good website with or without SEO. These days you can’t toss together a website and then expect Google to throw a bunch of traffic your way.

Information Was and Still IS King

As I said in What is SEO – A Beginners Guide, the search engines’ goal is to provide search results that have the greatest odds of satisfying the search user. A website that has a lot of useful information is going to win out over a website that doesn’t. Many businesses want a great website but they aren’t willing to put in the time it takes to create the content so they cut corners. They write a paragraph or two for each page and call it good. It isn’t good for the visitor and it certainly isn’t good for SEO. Don’t think content, think information. No amount of SEO can fix a lack of good information.

The Customer Perspective

If you are selling a product or service, look at it from your perspective of your customers. What questions will they have? Does your content answer those questions? When I owned SitStay, I set a goal to never receive a customer question about a product and we had upwards of 4,000 products. If they had to contact us with a question, I felt we hadn’t done our job. A lack of information creates doubt and doubt is a barrier. Remove the doubt with detailed content. Not only does all that detail satisfy the customer, it also creates more opportunity to appear in the search engines.

Make It Better

Before you worry about SEO, worry about the quality of your website. When you look at websites of your potential competitors, how do you think your site compares? What do they have that you don’t? Did you do it better? Is your site easy to use or do you have a ton of scattered topics the visitor will have to wade through? Be hard on your website. Your visitors will be. Then buckle down and make it better.
